Consolidated Flux — Variance Commentary Rollup

Merge flux commentary across entities, reports, accounts, and periods into a single unified narrative — rolling child-level explanations up to group level, stitching commentary across months for CFO or controller review.

Before You Begin

  • Numeric MCP connected.
  • Numeric Toolkit installed.
  • Flux commentary populated in the source reports (use Auto-Draft Flux Explanations to fill gaps first).
  • At least one flux report config (MoM IS, MoM BS, QoQ, etc.).

How It Works

  1. Ask Claude to consolidate. Example prompts:
    • "Consolidate flux across entities."
    • "Roll up variance commentary for March."
    • "Build the CFO flux summary."
    • "Unified variance view."
  2. Claude asks which dimension(s) to consolidate across (one or more):
    • Entities — merge flux from multiple subsidiaries
    • Reports — MoM IS and QoQ IS side-by-side per account
    • Accounts — child accounts rolled up to group narratives
    • Periods — trend commentary across months
  3. Claude pulls flux explanations, task comments, and report data for each dimension.
  4. Claude merges and — where applicable — synthesizes child narratives into group-level stories.
  5. Claude outputs an Excel workbook or markdown summary.

What You Get

A consolidated table with these columns:

Column Content
Account Group
e.g. "OpEx", "Revenue"
Account
If showing detail
Entity
If multi-entity
Variance $
With period labels in trend mode
Variance %
Consolidated Commentary
Merged narrative

Four consolidation modes:

  • Across entities — total row sums per group across subsidiaries
  • Across reports — MoM and QoQ side-by-side with both commentaries
  • Across accounts — group-level narrative with top 2–3 drivers attributed to child accounts
  • Across periods — trend: "Software Expense up 3 months in a row, +$12K / +$8K / +$15K, driven by vendor onboarding → license true-up → additional seats"

Persistent trends (3+ months same direction) and inflection points are auto-flagged.

File output: Consolidated_Flux_{Period}.xlsx.

Troubleshooting

Issue What to Check
Missing commentary
Only populated explanations get consolidated. Run Auto-Draft Flux Explanations first to fill gaps.
Rollup didn't flag a trend
Trend flagging requires 3+ months same direction. Shorter runs won't trigger a pattern callout.
Account hierarchy missing
Skill falls back to list_financial_accounts category codes to derive parent groups.
Duplicates across reports
Expected when the same account appears in both MoM and QoQ reports — side-by-side view shows both commentaries.

FAQ

  • Can I run on just one account? Yes — trend mode is great for single-account stories across 3–6 months.
  • Output format? Excel by default. Ask for markdown if you want a quick in-chat summary.
  • Does it pull task comments or just explanations? Both — comments often contain context not in the formal explanation.
